11/14 Dinner benefits Redman Foundation

The nonprofit Redman Foundation, in conjunction with the Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola, will hold a dinner fund-raiser Tuesday evening at the restaurant, 1750 Wharf Road.

The eatery will donate 30 percent of the total dinner cost from each party mentioning the Redman House when making reservations for that evening. Dinner will be served 5-9:15 p.m. For reservations, call the restaurant at 475-1511.

The Redman House, a five-bedroom Victorian in Watsonville, was designed by Watsonville architect William Weeks and built in 1898. The house needs seismic retrofitting and has stood empty since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

The foundation recently leased the 14-acre property just off Highway 1 at Riverside Drive with hopes of one day making it an educational, research and demonstration farm. The project could take 10 years and $10 million.

Redman Foundation Announces Fundraiser Dining at the Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola,
November 19, 2002

The Redman Foundation announces that once a year, the Shadowbrook Restaurant allows the Redman Foundation to host an informal fundraiser at the famed restaurant. This yearly fundraiser is unique, in that it allows the donor to enjoy a first class dinner with guest(s) of their own choosing. By simply mentioning the Redman House at the time the reservations are made for November 19, the Shadowbrook Restaurant will donate 30% of the total dinner cost to the Redman Foundation in support of the Foundation's efforts to preserve the Redman House and Farm. The dinner reservation must be made with the Shadowbrook Restaurant on the designated evening, next Tuesday, November 19, 2002.

Reservations can be made by calling 831-475-1511. The Shadowbrook Restaurant is located at 1750 Wharf Road in Capitola. The Redman Foundation hopes you will treat someone to a wonderful dinner, and mention the Redman House next Tuesday evening, November 19.

The Redman Foundation The Redman Foundation is working diligently to bring our hopes and dreams of restoration of the magnificent, 2-story Victorian home and farm located on the outskirts of Watsonville at Riverside Drive and Highway 1. The William Weeks-designed Queen Anne Victorian built in 1898 stands like a beacon in the middle of 14 acres of prime Pajaro Valley farmland.

The Redman House and farm land have a rich history. Originally built for the James Redman family, the house was designed by famed turn-of-the century Watsonville architect William Weeks in 1897. The home was also owned by the Hirahara family after 1930. The Hirahara family members were moved to internment camps during World War II, but were able to maintain ownership of the home. The house has stood empty since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and under new ownership, the farmland has been leased to various farmers over the past twenty years.

The Redman Foundation, a tax exempt non-profit organization, was formed by a group of local residents who, in collaboration with public agencies and private donors, plan to restore the house and surrounding farmland to new educational and public uses to sustain the property as an agricultural and tourist gateway to the Pajaro Valley.

The Redman House Foundation aims to promote and enhance the understanding and enjoyment of the agricultural resources and produce of the Pajaro Valley and reclaim the Redman House's timeless beauty. The Foundation will maintain the surrounding farmland as a research and demonstration farm, featuring formal gardens, sustainable practices, and certified organic farming.
