WILLIAM H. WEEKS - ARCHITECT
|
Born on January 18, 1864, in Charlottetown,
Prince Edward Island, Will Weeks was one of four children
born to Richard and Margaret Weeks. He had a brother,
Hammond, and two sisters, Ida and Jean. Richard Weeks
was a proficient builder and designer. He was to continue
in this work after the family moved to Denver, Colorado.
Will attended school at the Brinker Academy in Denver,
a day and boarding institution for males and females operating
from 1880 to 1889. The family moved a good deal, from
Denver to Wichita to Tacoma, before settling in the San
Francisco and Monterey Bay areas. In 1891 he married Maggie
Haymaker of Charlestown, Indiana.

Will's first project in the Watsonville
area was the Christian Church where he was an active member
for nearly his entire life. The first residence he is
known to have designed was the Judge Julius Lee home on
what is now known as East Beach Street. These buildings
served as the basis for a stunning architectural career.
Santa Cruz County was abundantly blessed by his quality
designs and noted structures include the Casino at the
Boardwalk and the Resetar and Palomar Hotels. He was responsible
for no less than 91 homes or remodeling designs in the
Pajaro Valley alone, many for the wealthy and prominent
Watsonville pioneer families. Banks, libraries, civic
buildings, hotels, schools and homes up and down the State
bear his design expertise. A huge percentage of them endure
to this day despite changing tastes, fires and earthquakes,
a testimony to his skill.
His life and career came to a close on
April 30, 1936 when the complications of a prior heart
attack caused his death.
His strikingly artistic designs spanning
the decades from elegant Queen Annes to idealized Tudors
to the clean-lined, tile-roofed Mediterraneans and Mission
Revivals, all tasteful and functional, are his legacy
for the generations.
